Panna National Park, situated in northern Madhya Pradesh is a Dry deciduous forest with acacia, teak and terminalia species of trees, and large number of grasslands. The park is located in the Vindhya Mountain range, and is among the most scenic parks in India. The park was included under the Tiger Reserve category in the year 1994, owing to the presence of a sizable population of tigers. But due to rampant poaching incidents and infrequent monitoring, the entire tiger population went locally extinct and that’s when the tiger reintroduction program was undertaken, and new gene pool introduced from other tiger reserves in the state. Owing to good management practices, the tiger population is now thriving and increasing. And owing to it, the sighting chances also have improved.
The park is incredibly scenic and host some of the most majestic sights for photographers. Apart from Tigers, the park has a sizable population of Leopards and Sloth Bears and a few wild dogs. While the preybase includes, Sambhar Deer, Spotted Deer, Antelopes such as Neelgai, Chowsingha, and occasional sightings of Chinkara. Winters see a lot of birds that arrive in the park. The park is best known for the Indian, White rumped, and Griffon vultures. The fields around the park invite the Saras Cranes in large number. The clean river that passes through the park, also invites a large number of wintering waterfowl. A large part of park consists of Ken Gharial Sanctuary, situated over the rivr Ken/Karnavati, which occupies a large area of the park and one can do a boat ride to spot large crocodiles.
